rapid pace of implementation of new technologies have placed an
increasing focus on learning through work and especially continuing
vocational education and training. Whilst previously most learning at
work was through provision of short courses there is evidence of a
shift to more work based learning.
Some organisations have adopted strategies for organisational learning
and others have attempted to become learning organisations.
It can be argued that much learning activity takes place through the
medium of undertaking work, although this is frequently not recognised.
Researchers have pointed to the importance of facilitation and
reflection on learning as important to cognitive learning processes.
However, research also suggests that access to learning at work is
extremely unequal, with the higher qualified and more senior employees
gaining most learning opportunities.
