Last Monday Graham Attwell met with Randy Metcalf, director of the UK OS watch project. OS watch is sponsored by the UK Universities Joint Information Services Committee. It aims to provide balanced and impartical advice to universities and further education colleges on the use of Open Source software. It was agreed at the meeting that there were a considerable number of areas in which the two projects could usefully collaborate.

work is progressing on organising the second SIGOSSEE project meeting. The meeting is provsionally scheduled for the 2nd and 3rd of June in Tralee in west Ireland. The plan is to hold the project meeting on Tuesday 2nd and the morning of Wednesday 3rd, with a seminar in the afternoon or evening. the seminar will be part of the Irish e-learning EdTech conference. The meeting is open to all interested. Further details will be posted on the site as they become available.

SIGOSSEE held its first project meeting in February, in Bremen, Germany. Following the meeting the Institut Technik und Blildung, the German partners in the project, issued a brief press release to the local daily newspaper, the Bremen Courier. The story was duly shortened to little more than a few paragraphs and appeared on the weekly feature on university news.

A proposal for a symposium from the Open Source SIGOSSEE project has been accepted for The European Conference on Educational Research in Crete in September. TH ECER conference is the largest educational conference in Europe, usually attracting in excess of 1000 delegates. The sysmposium is part of teh Vocational Education and Training (VET) strand of the ocnference but it is planned to hold the session jointly with the ECER Network 16 which deals with ICT in education. The proposed presentations are given below.

The SIGOSSEE meeting on 2 and 3 June will now take place in Limerick and not in Trallee as previously planned. This is due to the decision of the Irish Ed Tech conference to invite as keynote speaker the head of education from the US army - a decision which has caused consierable controversy with OSS advocates.

Graham Attwell has produced an extensive study on the Sustainability of e-learning. Produced in conjunction with the Lefo project, which is associated with Sigossee, the paper explores Open Source and Open Content as part of an overall strategy for the sustainability of e-learning. The next meeting of the SIGOSEE project is in Barcelona on 1 and 2 November. The first day will be given over to developments in the Special Interest Group and the second day will feature a public seminar on Open Content and Open Source. The meeting is being held together with the JOIN project and the Sixth Framework UNFOLD project, which is developintg a community around the Learning Design Standard.
