eLearning Conference - Towards a Learning Society:
In a bid to further the Lisbon agenda to become the world’s most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy by 2010, the Commission is holding a Conference on eLearning in Brussels on 19-20 May 2005. Bringing together a cross section of the various stakeholders involved in e-learning in Europe, the conference will provide the perfect forum for sharing experiences, exchanging examples of good practice and taking stock of the added value of using ICT in education and training.

While the European Union enjoys one of the highest levels of education and has the necessary investment capacity, it still lags behind in the use of new information and communication technologies. The conference will reflect on the need to reform education and training systems for the knowledge society, promoting digital literacy, e-skills, the up-skilling of the workforce and lifelong learning for all.

Riikka Rahikainen emailed me to say:

"We just finished a survey of the deployment of open source software in Finnish universities, polytechnics and schools. Here is the white paper I wrote on the issue."

Haven't read it myself yet but will add something to this site when I do.

We have just opened a new group weblog called FLOSSE Posse (Free/Libre and Open Source Software in Education Posse).

The reason for our existence is to start a conversation in the blogosphere about Open Source and Open Content in Education.

Current members of the blog are certain members of a finnish association called VOPE (Free and Open Source in Education Association). We accept guest bloggers as well.

We will begin with very interesting content related to the future of Open Source in education. We have done several digital audio interviews all around the globe of people who work in the field of education and Open Source. The interviews are analyzed and reported on our website.

We aim to bring together different ideas of the future of Open Source from people who work on various fields.

In the upcoming weeks we are reporting our findings related to the Comenius 2.1 Contact Seminar held in Europe, which features an Open Source in Education related workshop where the previously mentioned interviews will be analyzed further.

Some of the interviews we have done include Stephen Downes (downes.ca), Alan Levine (cogdogblog), Knut Yrvin (skolelinux.no), George Siemens (elearnspace), Teemu Leinonen (fle3) and Antti Kauppi (University of Helsinki). These will be posted shortly.

Update on the (No)softwarepatents discussion in the European Union

23-February-2005

[ Open-Source ]
A lot is going on in Europe.
Since my last brief information a lot is going on in the European parliament. Here are the highlights of the still very controversial process between the European Council and the European parliament. More and more national parliaments positioning against the existing directive from the European Council of 2004 and requesting a restart of the whole process.

1. Vast majority in Legal Affairs Committee of European Parliament demands restart of legislative process on software patent directive. (03 February 2005)

http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=327

2. The European Parliament's request for the software patent directive to be started from scratch was ratified by senior members of the Parliament on February 18 2005.

3. Concerns over "Microsoft's best friend in the Commission" who will decide on EP's restart request.
