Criteria list

LMS evaluation criteria

There are five fields identified as important for evaluating the quality of Learning Management System.

  • Functional requirements Functional requirements are captured by a feature questionnaire. This feature questionnaire asks for the existence or quality of a comprehensive set of features. The questionnaire serves as a means for inspection of the Learning Management Systems for the project members. It covers the access and security features as well as permissions implementation, didactics, tests and assessment, authoring, course monitoring, communication, and administration.
  • Maintainability Quality is also affected by non-functional characteristics of a Learning Management System. The system has to meet requirements that can support future changes. Three things mainly determine the quality needs deriving from future changes: system architecture, standard compliance and documentation. The architecture affects the extent to which a system is scalable, extensible, and adaptable. Standards compliance is important to avoid a dead end of anybody's e-learning efforts. Standard compliant content can be transferred and re-used easily. The quality of the available documentation is also crucial.
  • Usability The usability of a system is important to consider, when deciding for a Learning Management System. The system should be easy to use for all people involved: tutors, administrators, and learners. Since they have to use the system they definitely need training. The Learning Management System should as well be easy to navigate.
  • Support quality Support is also crucial, since an open source product does not have any warranty. This part asks for the quality of the support available, since the operating institution requires effective support during day-to-day operations and when facing problems.
  • Total Cost of Ownership The quality concept reflects quality considerations that stem from the open source licensing of the Learning Management Systems. If the developer lacks enthusiasm or funding the development process might crack down. The organisation employing their software will then face a severe problem. It may well have to switch the Learning Management System, thus switching costs will occur. Another important point of consideration is support: Usually an organisation wants to purchase continuous support and/or development of the product. This support costs are as well considered a part of the total cost of ownership. Under the headline of ‘Total cost of ownership’ the team behind the system is screened.
