Product sheet: Sakai 1.0

  • LMS name: Sakai
  • Brief description:  Sakai is an ambitious two years project beginning in 2004 founded by the University of Michigan, Indiana University, MIT, Stanford, the uPortal Consortium, and the Open Knowledge Initiative (OKI) with the support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Sakai partners are joining forces to integrate and synchronize their considerable educational software into a pre-integrated collection of open source tools. The products of this project will include an Enterprise Services-based Portal, a complete Course Management System with sophisticated assessment tools, a Research Support Collaboration System, a Workflow Engine, and a Technology Portability Profile (TPP) as a clear standard for writing future tools that can extend this core set of educational applications.

  • Evaluation sheet: Sakai 1.0 has not been evaluated since this early version does not still offer features for assessment and authoring of tests and thus does not conform our LMS Minimum Definition. Further realeases of Sakai due to 2005 will be fully evaluated.
  • Evaluation date: 2005/02/07

Pros
  • The Sakai project aims code mobility in higher education in the core areas of online teaching, research and provision of campus portals.
  • It is based in a Technology Portability Profile (TPP) architecture that provides four essential elements for code mobility:
  1. Service Interface Definitions (based on the OKI open service interface definitions)
  2. Standard Portal (based on recently ratified JSR 168 potlet standard)
  3. Tool Interaction Framework
  4. Localized User Interface
  • Sakai is a re-factored set of educational software tools that blends the best features from the participants' disparate software to create a services-based, enterprise portal for tool delivery.
Cons
  • Early phases of Sakai project are using legacy capabilities coming from the CHEF  environment developed by the University of Michigan.
  • Development and tool deployment will be a mix of legacy and new Sakai capabilities throughout through Sakai 3.0 (late 2005).
Main installations in the world
The Sakai Educational Partner’s Program (SEPP) is a for fee community that is open to educational institutions. SEPP provides partners early information on the direction of the Sakai Project, strategic briefings to help plan for Sakai at partner institutions, discussions of the project roadmap, etc.  About 60 universities are Sakai SEPP partners.
See http://sakaiproject.org/partners.html
Installations in Spain
The Universitat de Lleida is the only SEPP partner in Spain.
Notes Sakai Project is funded for two years (2004-2005). The Sakai Educational Partner’s Program is the long-term sustainability organization for the Sakai Project software after the initial two year development grant.
