Technical sheet: DoceboLMS 2.0.4

  Technical sheet
Functional features
Didactics/Learning flow management With DoceboLMS it is possible to establish rules between the learning objects in a such way that students must execute them in a fixed order.
Tests and assesment It's possible to create tests (with single answer or multiple answer) within the platform, but no importing facilities are available. Success can be evaluated in percent or absolute values.
Media formats/Authoring Contents can be created within the system as HTML pages and documents, in whatever format (Doc, PDF, HTML, etc), can be uploaded. SCORM modules are also supported with packaging and runtime. Users can be created and imported using files with data in CSV format.
Course monitoring Students enroll themselves or the administrator can create and enroll students. The professor can track the students (the access time and the test results), moreover he can see the results and the state of the SCORM Courses.
Communication Chat is available as synchronous communication, on the other side forums and internal emails are present as asynchronous communication.
General look and feel of the system The system employs style sheets: users can choose one of the templates available or, for the administrator, to develope a new one. It's easy to customize the login page (but the code needs to be modified).
Permissions handling There are 8 available roles (god, admin, professor, tutor, mentor, student, guest an ghost) and, with this version, it's possible to define new specific beginning from administrator role: in fact it's possible to modify the access rights to single objects (for example we might have one users admin or a courses admin, etc). Users can be organized in groups.
Other features At the moment four languages (Italian, English, Spanish and Portuguese) are available.
Maintainability
Quality of technical documentation There's no documentation for developers.
Scalability It's not documented if the system is scalable for big environments: we suggest running it on small/medium enterprises (schools, universities, etc). The system can administrate one client (customer) for each installation and is quite reliable.
Extensibility With DoceboLMS developers have deeply employed an object-oriented approach but, for the moment, there isn't yet a plug-in concept. Taking a look at the code we should have preferred a better carried-out separation between the GUI (HTML code) and the php code. Users' requirements, bug reports and users' suggestions are handled inside the forum. There isn't a repository available online and at the moment there are 2 available stable versions.
Adaptability/standard compliance Features are built within modules that are separated from each other. The system supports SCORM 1.2 compliance and shows statistics for users or lessons.
Usability
User documentation The documentation for users is not available (there on the web site only a demo made with flash technology), for teachers and administrators are available manuals in Italian and in English (quite good).
Generating content The tools for the creation of the HTML pages and tests are quite good and easy to use.
Level of expertise needed The whole system is easy to use and for each level of actor involved in the process and the training period might be really short.
Other The system is easy to navigate and simple to understand.
Support quality
Note It's possible to contact the core team in order to develope new features and to get assistance on the basis of different contract types, for the product support it's possible to access to the forum. There are also available hosting services and the team is responsive: it's possible to get an answer in about one day.
Total cost of ownership
Type of users There are installations for each of the categories (the private sector is the biggest) and we estimate a few thousands users all over the world.
Financial stability The core team started to develop in 2004, and we estimate that 6 people have been involved in this development for 2 years.
One time cost There are no special HW needs for a new installation, and in order to get a system running less than one day is needed.
Recurring costs There are no special requirements for a system with DoceboLMS on it, we might have need to patch or to upgrade the system, and sometimes to reboot the platform.
